A spirited start to our Spirit of Place project

The hills were alive around the Willow Globe last weekend, resounding to the sound of Youth Groups as forty local young people came together to explore their initial responses to creating a voice for the young people of Mid-Wales to contribute to the Cultural Olympiad in 2012. The “Spirit of Place” project is headed up by Shakespeare Link with the collaboration of Powys County Council and is open to all young people; this year’s festival was a pilot for a further event in 2012 which will result in a performance touring Wales and hopefully visiting London for the Olympiad celebrations.

The youngest participants came from Red Kite Theatre Company based at Three Cocks, Powys Youth Service brought a dazzling group from Knighton and Presteigne, and the Mid Powys Youth Theatre continued working on their new play Navigating on Light. Workshop exercises brought all the participants together and over the weekend they developed a show which included individual contributions from the three groups as well as some group exploration of the Spirit of Place theme.

The first performance took place on Sunday afternoon, blessed by fine weather, and a further performance will be at the Wyeside in Builth Wells on Saturday 1st October at 7pm as part of Powys Arts Month. Tickets cost £5/£3 and are available from Wyeside. If you want to catch Navigating on Light it will perform at the Drama Centre, Llandrindod Wells on Thursday 25th & Friday 26th August at 8pm.

Young people and leaders alike thoroughly enjoyed the Spirit of Place weekend and during an evaluation session the overwhelming response was “awesome”!
